Friendly reminder to McAllen residents: recycling your Christmas tree is easy, and an environmentally friendly way to keep organic waste out of the landfill.
Drop off your natural tree at the McAllen Compost Facility - .4101 N. Bentsen Rd. open Monday - Friday, 8 to 4:30; Saturdays 8 to noon.
Trees are processed as part of the City of McAllen TX Government's composting operations and may be used to create mulch for landscaping.

Today’s lesson is about how to think before, during, and after every move. This chart isn’t just a poster — it’s a mental routine. Strong players don’t guess. They follow a process.
Let’s break it down step by step.

Before you even touch a piece, pause and scan the board.
Ask yourself:
• 👑 Is my king safe? (Am I in check or almost in check?)
• ⚔️ Is any of my pieces attacked?
• 🧠 What is my opponent’s plan? What are they threatening next?
👉 Rule: Never rush your move. Most blunders happen when players skip this step.

Now that you understand the position, it’s time to choose a move — not randomly, but in the correct order.

Learn about the cochineal insect and the carmine pigment that has been used throughout history to create art from the Renaissance to Indigenous textiles and more. Participants will use cochineal insects to make their own paint pigment and experiment with other organic materials to create different colors as they fabricate their Insecta-inspired work of art.
This workshop includes a tour of the Insecta: Small Wonders exhibit by Gabriel Rodriguez. Museum admission included with workshop registration. Advanced registration is encouraged due to limited capacity.

Participants will use cochineal insects to make their own paint pigment and experiment with other organic materials to create different colors as they fabricate their Insecta-inspired work of art. This workshop includes a tour of the Insecta: Small Wonders exhibit by Gabriel Rodriguez. Museum admission included with workshop registration. Advanced registration is encouraged due to limited capacity.
