Grateful for Water
On Exhibit at the IMAS
January 14 - April 26, 2026
The Grateful for Water art contest is an annual initiative hosted by McAllen Public Utility’s Water Education Team, designed specifically for high school students who live in McAllen. The contest encourages students to explore the value of water in their daily lives, reflecting on its importance in our community, environment, and future. Participants are challenged to express their creativity while considering the role water plays in sustaining life and the responsibility we all share to conserve this vital resource.
2025 marked the third year of MPU hosting this contest, which featured an impressive array of paintings and drawings from students across the city. The theme this past year was “Clean Water, Clean Future.” Each piece highlights water and its beauty, significance, and the importance of smart water usage, offering unique perspectives and creative interpretations of the theme. The students’ artwork provides viewers with an engaging and meaningful visual experience.
The winning and participating artworks are proudly displayed in this exhibit as a celebration of creativity, education, and environmental stewardship. Through this contest, McAllen Public Utility aims to inspire a deeper appreciation for water among our city’s youth and encourage them to become thoughtful stewards of this essential resource. We are grateful to all the students who participated and hope their work motivates the community to reflect on the importance of water in daily life.

New Arrival!
Nicholas Firfires CA (1917 - 1990) "Mexican Vaquero," 10" x 8", oil on canvas.
Early Cowboy Artists of America painter Nicholas Firfires grew up living and learning the cowboy way of life, from breaking horses to herding cattle. His time on the big ranches of California would inform his themes as a painter and illustrator. In 1969 he won the Silver Medal Award for watercolor in the Fourth Annual Exhibit of the Cowboy Artists of America, and his work often focused on contemporary and historic western scenes in a realist and sometimes impressionistic way.
This painting of a fashionable vaquero in front of a grand vista is on display currently at Nuevo Santander Gallery.

Just landed at Myth!
Come by and check out this beautiful new statue by sideshow!
Sideshow presents the Darth Nihilus™ Premium Format™ Figure. From the expanded universe of Star Wars Legends, this officially licensed Star Wars™ collectible delves into the galaxy’s limitless lore.
Measuring 25.25 inches (64.13 cm) tall, 21 inches (53.3 cm) wide, and 21 inches (53.3 cm) deep, the Darth Nihilus™ Premium Format™ Figure is the grotesque embodiment of insatiable emptiness. With his dark cloak consuming all the space around him, Darth Nihilus leaps from a fragmented tomb surrounded by barren desert landscape. The weathered red rocks turn to the rusty color of dried blood when illuminated by this vicious villain’s Lightsaber™. He drains Force energy from every creature on his quest to preserve his own life, turning his heart as black as the robes he wears.
This fully sculpted quarter scale Darth Nihilus collectible is inspired by designs from the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic™ video games. Inlaid with a sharp silver centerpiece, a smooth porcelain-like mask hides a gaunt face and obsidian eyes ravaged by the dark side. It also features an alternate headsculpt depicting a realistically rotted skull mask, which emphasizes the the brutal nature of this cursed character. Tattered edges and detailed folds resembling fabric obscure a physical persona entirely sustained by pain — and held together through sheer will and ravenous consumption. The figure’s base features remnants from a broken Sith monument which has been eroded by sand and wretched eternity. Additionally, this Star Wars statue includes a light-up red Lightsaber™, showcasing the burning malice of this terrifying character.

For more than a decade, The Flying Walrus has been part of downtown McAllen’s live music and small-business community. Since opening in 2012, the venue has hosted thousands of performances by local, regional, and touring artists, while working in good faith with City departments to address issues as they arise and comply with applicable requirements.
Over the past year, that long-standing dynamic has changed.
Matters that were historically handled through communication and correction and that were fully curable have escalated into citations, court proceedings, and prolonged uncertainty. Despite a record of cooperation and responsiveness, the venue is now required to defend itself in multiple legal proceedings.
Legal defense takes time, money, and stamina resources that many small businesses simply do not have. Systems often rely on fatigue, cost, and discouragement. Not because concerns lack merit, but because most people cannot afford to push back for long. Faced with that reality, many choose to walk away rather than pursue fairness.
We are choosing not to walk away.
Funds raised through this campaign will be used exclusively for:
• Legal defense costs and attorney retainers
• Court filings, records requests, and compliance-related expenses
• Professional support needed to respond properly and responsibly
Every dollar raised helps offset the financial pressure of defending a small business through a process that can otherwise be overwhelming.
This effort is not about attacking the City, and it is not about avoiding accountability. It is about ensuring that a long-standing small business is treated fairly and given a reasonable opportunity to comply without being destabilized by abrupt shifts in enforcement.
The Flying Walrus has always believed in being part of the solution and working collaboratively, addressing issues, and contributing to the cultural and economic life of downtown McAllen. This effort is about preserving that opportunity, not just for one venue, but for the artists, staff, and community members who rely on independent local spaces like this one.
If you’ve ever enjoyed live music here, supported local artists, or believe that small businesses deserve fair treatment and clear processes, your support matters.
Thank you for standing with us.

#nicholasfirfires #nuevosantandergallery #westernart #cowboyartistsofamerica #vaquero

Grateful for Water On Exhibit at the IMAS January 14 - April 26, 2026 mcallenpublicutility The Grateful for Water art contest is an annual initiative hosted by McAllen Public Utility’s Water Education Team, designed specifically for high school students who live in McAllen. Myth Adventures
#starwars #statue #disney

The Flying Walrus
Donate to Support The Flying Walrus Legal Defense, organized by The Flying Walrus
Funds raised through this campaign will be used exclusively for: • Legal defense costs and attorney retainers • Court filings, records requests, and compliance-related expenses • Professional support needed to respond properly and responsibly Every dollar raised helps offset the financial pressure of defending a small business through a process that can otherwise be overwhelming.
